Should I Hire an In-House Videographer for My Edinburgh Business?

August 6, 2021
Hey, this will take you about 3 minutes to read

In short, I think it’s something you should consider.

And here’s why.

Keeping Up

In the last few years, people have become wise to nice-looking websites and Facebook ads. Gone are the days of 1000% return on investment on Facebook Ad campaigns.

As the competition increases, Facebook hike their prices up, and people are realising that every fourth post on their Facebook feed isn’t really a post at all – it’s an ad!

So, why should you hire a videographer?

Standing Out

What you want to consider is how to create interesting and one-off content, focused around you and your business, that stands out from others.

But what really makes your business stand out? You. Your face and your team. And nothing helps build trust with a brand more than seeing the people behind it!

The Future is Video

This is where video plays a huge part. There is only so much written word and imagery can do to communicate your love and passion for your craft. And these days, with video being far-and-away the preferred way to consume content online, showcasing your business in video format is a no-brainer.

Now of course, outsourcing video from a video production company (like us!) is a great way to incorporate video into your sales process and marketing efforts. But there does come a point where outsourcing may not be the best option.

Exclusively Yours

The problem is that, no matter how thorough this production company may be, they will never be able to truly understand the intricacies of you and your business. How could they? They’re not with you 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. And they’re not there to watch how you do business.

An in-house videographer, on the other hand:

    • Can be there whenever and wherever you need them.
    • Will spend all of their time with you and your business, making them better at communicating much more accurately and personally what you’re trying to communicate.
    • Increases the likelihood of consistency between the marketing messaging and the reality of the internal brand voice.
    • Won’t ever prioritise other businesses, because you’re their only concern. They work for you, and you only.
    • Won't be restricted to a certain amount of content or by time limitations, like a production company would be.

So, Should I?

Overall, if your business is already producing lots of content and you want to take it to the next level, hiring an in-house videographer will be a decision you won’t regret. In fact, you may even consider hiring a second, once you realise how invaluable they are to your marketing efforts!

Something to Consider

Before you take the plunge though, there are a couple of things you might want to consider first.

Firstly, hiring a creative is usually somewhat different to hiring a non-creative. Creatives love to be free to do their thing. They can spend hours making the perfect video, without really considering what might be a better use of their time and energy.

This is because, generally speaking, creatives tend not to have so much of an organisational, analytical mindset when it comes to their work. Obviously, there are exceptions and this is a huge generalisation, but it is something you should be aware of before you hire a videographer. You may have to direct and manage them more than you planned to!

Secondly, consider what other things you might need them to do. If all you need them for is one type of video, then great. But often, you'll need them to add some graphics or perhaps even some animation to your videos. Or you may ask them to snap a few photos while they're at it. Don't assume they will be skilled in all of these areas, as they may only specialise in video alone.

If this is the case, and you realise you actually need either a multi-skilled person or multiple people, a production company may actually be more appropriate for you as they will usually be able to accommodate for these things.
